Attractions in the Sundays River Valley

The Sundays River Valley offers you a wide variety of attractions.

Historical Sites

The area is home to several historical sites, which date back as far as 1829. The most well known site is the Drift House. This is the inn which was used by most people crossing the Addo drift from the old Cape Colony into the Hinterland. The valley has also experienced its share of war, with all the South African ethnic groups being involved at one time or another.

Addo Elephant Park

The Addo Elephant Park which is approximately 40 minutes away, offers you the opportunity to partake in various activities. From Game viewing, horse-riding, picnicking and hiking, there will be something for you to do.

Game Viewing
You can enjoy game viewing from your own vehicle. Stop at a number of lookout points at waterholes or explore more than 75km of roads through the wilderness. Alternatively, you can enjoy a guided game drive in open vehicles by day, at sunset or by night. Buffalo and Black Rhinos are most frequently spotted at night.

Hiking Trails
You can also enjoy a hike through Elephant country, under the watchful guidance of the Park's nature guides. Rhino trekking excursions are also available.

The PPC Discovery Trail is a unique 2km trail through typical Addo thicket has been specially designed for disabled visitors and is suitable for people in wheelchairs. This allows you to learn more about the plants and animals of this region.

You can choose to take a sedate walk along the Cycad Trail, which is a one-hour trail. If you are fit and enjoy the outdoors, you can tackle the Doringnek Trail. This four-hour trail takes you past a beautiful natural pool. The trails are well marked and maps are available at the Zuurberg offices. No bookings are necessary.

Horse Trails
There are various horse trails available in the Addo Elephant Park. The lengths of the trails vary and cater for experienced and less experienced riders. All horse trails are conducted by experienced guides and the horses are well-trained.

4 X 4 Trail
For the 4 X 4 enthusiasts, there is Bedrogfontein 4X4 trail between Kabouga and Darlington areas of the park. This route provides breathtaking views and is rich in history. Fierce battles took place here between the British and Boer forces, during the Anglo-Boer war. There are also Rock art paintings scattered throughout the area. You will get to see various types of vegetation, from riverine thicket, to afromontane forest, to fynbos on the peaks and into the arid nama-karoo of the Darlington area.

This route is self-driven and can be followed from Kabouga, which is situated about 40 km from the main park gate near Kirkwood. The route is only suitable for 4 X 4 vehicles with low range facilities and is graded 2-3. The route is 45 km and can be completed within six hours.

Daniell Cheetah Breeding Farm

Baby Cheetah

Just a short 15 minute drive away from the Geelhoutboom Bed and Breakfast is the Daniell Cheetah Breeding Farm. This is home to two of the Cheetahs that took part in the making of the film, Duma.

At the Daneill Cheetah Breeding Farm, visitors are encouraged to interact with the Cheetahs. You can touch them and have your photograph taken with some of them. The aim is to educate people about the importance of conserving cheetahs. Be sure not to miss out on this fantastic experience.

You can also enjoy a light meal or coffee break here, or feed the tame Kudu's and Springboks.
